Abstract

568,367. Rotary internal-combustion engines. MILES AIRCRAFT, Ltd. (formerly PHILLIPS & POWIS AIRCRAFT, Ltd.), and HEAL, L. C. July 27, 1943, No. 12241. [Class 110 (ii)] The engine may have a single working- chamber 2 with an abutment 7 pressing on the periphery of an eccentric rotor 5, but preferably has two chambers 2, 2a, with a common abutment 7. The rotors are 180‹ out of phase, and geared together for opposite rotation. Inlet and outlet ports 8, 9, are provided, and valves 20, 20a, control fluid flow. Rings, 12 supported on bearings may surround the rotors. The engine may use spark-ignition or compression-ignition. A small clearance may be allowed between a rotor and its cylinder bore. A doubleacting piston 13 is acted upon alternately by gases fired in firing chambers 14, 14a, to supply fuel gas under pressure to the opposite chambers. The semi-rotary sleeve valves control the admission of compressed gas to the firing chambers, and the admission of the gases after firing, to the working-chambers. The fired gases act upon the end of a rod 17 to actuate the piston 13. Gas is admitted by valves 19, 19a, into the cylinder 15. Intercooling may be used between the compression and engine stages. The ends of the abutment may be shaped to improve the sealing effect and may embody roller bearings. The bores of the valves 20, 20a, may be scavenged. The Provisional Specification states that the ends of the abutment may comprise graphite impregnated strips 5, and the inlet valve may be subject to barometric control.
