Abstract
1,085,231. Combustion-product engines driving compressors. BRISTOL SIDDELEY ENGINES Ltd. Aug. 19, 1964 [May 23, 1963], No. 20547/63. Headings F1 N and F1S. An engine and compressor unit comprises a casing 1 having a plurality e. g. six engine cylinders 2 arranged in a circle each having slidable therein an engine piston 4 coaxially connected by a ball ended rod 24 to a compressor piston 18 slidable in a cylinder 19 closed by a head 20 provided with concentric automatic inlet and outlet poppet valves 25, 26. Each head 20 has a collar 29 and is secured to the casing 1 by arms 21 passing through slots 22 in the respective engine piston 4. Each collar 29 has a central opening closable by one of the inlet valves 25 and around which one of the annular outlet valves 26 is slidable. The pistons 4 are reciprocated by the combustion of fuel with gas such as decomposed hydrogen peroxide supplied in sequence to each cylinder 2 through a passage 10 in a valve 11 rotatable by a shaft 3 driven by a swash plate 7, 8 actuated by the conical ends 6 of the pistons 4. Each cylinder 2 contains a ring of exhaust ports 14 communicating with an annular exhaust manifold 15. The gas is compressed in, a first stage comprising four cylinders connected in parallel, and a second stage consisting of the remaining two cylinders also connected in parallel. Gas passes from an annular intake chamber 41 successively into each low pressure compressor cylinder 19 through ducts 30 and inlet valves 25. Thereafter the compressed gas passes the outlet valves 26 into ducts 33 communicating with an inter-stage chamber 43 wherefrom ducts 30 communicate the gas to the two high pressure cylinders discharging through outlet pipes 44.
