Abstract

604,171. Rotary engines and compressors. STEVENS, A. H. (Reynolds Metals Co.). Nov. 26, 1945, No. 31807. [Class 110 (ii)] A multi-stage engine or compressor has pistons 11 travelling through annular chambers 22 and co-acting with recesses in a rotary abutment 28, the cross-sectional areas of the compressor cylinders 8<xx>, 8<x>, 8 being gradually diminished and those of the engine 26, 24, 22 being gradually increased. Spiral passages such as 56, 23 connect adjacent chambers. The compressor may lead gas to a combustion chamber 20 where it is fired, the gases expanding through the engine cylinder, or fuel oil may be injected into the compressed air as by a pump 61. Steam or compressed air may be used as the working fluid and the compressed air from the compressor used externally. To facilitate the starting of the internal-combustion engine, a pressure-operated valve may be used to admit fluid to the first and second cylinders simultaneously. The abutment and casing have cooling passages through them. Coolant for the casing enters through a pipe 45 and is pumped, by a pump 46, through a pipe 47 and ports 49. The coolant leaves by ports 51 and a pipe 52. Coolant for the hollow pistons is supplied from a passage 13, in the shaft 6 by way of ducts 12, cool oil displacing the hotter oil in the pistons. The gears 31<x>, 32<x> and 31, 32, coupling the abutment shaft 29<x> to the shaft 6, are used as gear pumps to force cooling and lubricating oil into the abutment. The latter has outlet ports 41 for oil to pass to the outside of the abutment rotor. When the fuel-injection pump 61 is used, the plunger 62 is actuated by a cam 64. The position of a needle valve 70, to control the oil inlet, may be adjusted simultaneously with the adjustment of a butterfly throttle valve in the air inlet pipe.
