Classes 7(2) and 7(6) A positive displacement pump n, delivering to the air intake j of a two-stroke or four-stroke diesel engine and supplied through a cooler e by a second air pump or compressor d which draws from the atmosphere, has its suction periods shortened at high engine loads so that the air which it receives is expanded and thereby cooled before delivery to the engine, whilst at low engine loads or speeds the full suction periods are used and the air is delivered to the engine under increased pressure. As shown, the compressor d is powered by an exhaust-driven turbine a and a double-acting piston pump n has ports h, i each in communication alternately with the cooler delivery pipe g and the intake j through an engine-driven rotary valve f axially displaceable by a connection m to an engine-driven governor so that a taper r of the valve provides variable cut-off of the pump suction periods. A Roots blower, controlled by a valve in its inlet analogous to the valve f, may form the positive displacement pump. According to the Provisional Specification, the compressor d may be of axial or radial flow type or may be mechanically driven, and the pump n may be engine-driven.
