Abstract

575,502. Pumps. AKTIEBOLAGET GOTAVERKEN. Aug. 17, 1944, No. 15766. Convention date, May 7, 1943. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] In an engine charged by a pump driven by an exhaust-actuated turbine, exhaust gases at a pressure higher than the final pressure in the engine cylinders are supplied to the turbine with an adjustable amount of high-pressure air, in addition to the normal exhaust gas supply. A charging compressor 4 is driven by an exhaustactuated turbine 3 which, in addition to being supplied with exhaust gas through a conduit 5, is supplied with high-pressure gas from a conduit 7, high-pressure air being added through pipes 18 from a reciprocating compressor 21. The pipes 18 are connected near the exhaust valves which are thereby cooled. This cooling may be improved by passing the air through a jacket round the valve stems. If the high-pressure exhaust is supplied from piston-controlled ports, double-seated poppet valves may also be provided. The supply of air is controlled by a spring-loaded piston 22, Fig. 3, the air arriving by a pipe 26. The loading is adjustable by rotation of a hand wheel 24. As the pressure increases, delivery pipes 20, 19, leading to the turbine nozzles, and 17 leading to the exhaust conduit 7, are opened in succession. The air supply pipe 15 for the pump 21 may be connected through a cooler 16 to the engine admission conduit 13, or to atmosphere. The pump 21 may be replaced by a rotary compressor, but instead air under pressure may be supplied independently of the engine.
