Abstract

560,735. Four-stroke engines. MIRRLEES, BICKERTON, & DAY, Ltd., and JACKSON, P. Jan. 6,1943, No. 232. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] In an engine in which a charge of air is introduced in two parts at different pressures, a shroud on the air valve temporarily blocks the air passage at the beginnings of the suction and compression strokes. An auxiliary air passage 11, Fig. 1, controlled by a valve 2, or a separate passage 18, Fig. 2, controlled by the main air valve 13, supply scavenging air to the cylinder 10 at the start of the induction stroke and supercharging air at the end of that stroke or the start of the compression stroke. A rocker arm 6 may actuate both valves simultaneously, but whereas the auxiliary valve 2 admits air to the cylinder immediately, a mask 4 on the main air valve prevents the passage of air therethrough until the valves have been opened sufficiently for a sleeve 8 on the auxiliary valve 2 to close the passage 11 ; as the valves close a second charge is delivered through the passage 11 as soon as the mask 4 closes the main air passage. As shown in Fig. 2, a sleeve 15 on the main air valve replaces the auxiliary air valve 2 and its sleeve 8. The air may be supplied from a blower driven from the cam-shaft or by an exhaust driven turbine which may operate in two stages, the first stage supplying the main air passage and the second stage of the compressor and the second stage delivering to the auxiliary air passage.
