Abstract
568,375. Cycles ; oil engines. MACAULAY, J. W. Jan. 1, 1944, No. 26. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (iii)] In a compression ignition or other engine operating on a four-stroke cycle, exhaust ports 13 are uncovered before the end of the first outward or power stroke of the piston 11 and continue open during the first part of the succeeding or first inward stroke thereof, air being admitted to the cylinder, at least during the period of opening of the exhaust ports, through a valve 18 or a valve in a compression chamber 19 in the cylinder head or both ; the later part of this inward stroke compresses the air into the chamber 19 which at the end of the stroke is cut off from the cylinder, air being again drawn into the cylinder through the valve 18 on the second outward stroke of the piston to be compressed on its second inward stroke near the end of which the compression chamber 19 is opened to the cylinder, prior to the fuel being injected through a nozzle 21 into the chamber 19 at about the end of the stroke. Air escaping through the exhaust ports between the second outward and inward strokes may be used to cool the blades of a turbine driven by the exhaust and operating a compressor for supplying air under pressure to the air inlet valves. As shown, the compression chamber 19 is cylindrical and its communication with the cylinder is controlled by an oscillating sleeve valve 20 which also controls the port of the fuel injector 21. The air inlet valve of the chamber 20 is disposed axially thereof and may be automatic in action.
