Abstract

Ports in the cylinder are uncovered at b.d.c. to discharge exhaust and a cylinder head scavenge valve is opened to allow air under pressure to scavenge the exhaust gases. <IMAGE>

Description

Improvements to four stroke internal combustion Diston engines This invention relates to the improvement of the operation of a four stroke internal combustion piston engine equipped with a means of pressurising an inlet tract.
Traditional four stroke piston engines have inlet valves for the admission of the gaseous mixture and exhaust valves for the release of the products of combustion. These valves reside in the top of the engine cylinder or in the cylinder head and are operated by cams which control the timing of their opening and closing.
In this invention the traditional valves are retained but in addition exhaust ports are provided in the cylinder walls positioned so as to be uncovered and opened by the piston at the lower point of it's movement allowing the expanding exhaust gases to escape. An extra valve in addition to the normal inlet and exhaust valves is provided driven and timed by a cam to open when the cylinder exhaust ports are open so as to admit air under pressure from a supercharger turbocharger or suitable pump into the cylinder and scavenge the products of combustion through the cylinder ports. The rising piston expels the remaining diluted exhaust gases through the traditional exhaust valve opening in the normal manner, and the subsequant inlet phase of the engine cycle is carried out as in the traditional four stroke engine.
A diagram of the engine layout is shown in Fig 1.
The same operational engine cycle may be obtained on an engine with pressurised inlet tract and timed injection of the fuel by the addition of a lobe on the inlet valve cam positioned to open the inlet valve when the cylinder exhaust ports are opened by the descending piston thus admitting air from the inlet tract under pressure to effect the scavenging of the exhaust gases. The rest of the traditional four stroke cycle of exhaust stoke, inlet stroke, compression and combustion then follows.

Claims (1)

  1. Claims
1/ A four stroke piston engine with supercharger, turbocharger or suitable air pump but with the addition of exhaust ports in the engine cylinders and additional valves positioned and timed to admit to the cylinders air under pressure to scavenge the products of combustion through the cylinder ports.
2/ The modified engine as in Claim 1/ provides improved means of the expulsion of the exhaust gases and greater dilution of the exhaust gases by the scavenging air.
3/ The modified engine as in Claim 1/ has improved cooling of the combustion region of the engine by the passage of the scavenging air.
4/ The modified engine as in Claim 1/ has the hottest region of the engine moved to the area of the cylinder ports which is more easily cooled.
5/ The modified engine as in Claim 1/ provides for greater dilution of any exhaust gases left in the engine cylinder with consequent less corruption of the next inlet charge.
6/ The modified engine as in Claim 1/ provides improved conditions in the combustion chamber for the ignition and burning of the air/fuel mixture by virtue of Claims 3, 4 & 5.
7/ The modified engine as in Claim 1/ provides for improved quality of the exhaust emmisions by virtue of Claims 2 & 6.
