Abstract

513,587. Two-stroke and four-stroke gas engines; regulating. BALMFORD, A. B., and JONES, J. March 14, 1938, No. 7909. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] A gas engine is controlled by injecting a regulated quantity of compressed gas into the cylinder after the closure of the air admission ports, which are so arranged that the air is whirled on entry. The regulation is effected from a governor 12, (a) by adjusting the lift of the injection valve through its tappet 10, the leverage of a rocker 7 being varied by linkage 9, 91, 12<1>, 13, and (b) by varying the clearance of the gas pump 2 by movement of an auxiliary piston 3 by linkage 5, 13<1>. These operations may be effected through servomotors; in an alternative arrangement the regulation (b) may be effected by a servomotor in accordance with the pressure in a tank through which the compressed gas is supplied. The whirling of the air charge may be effected by tangential passages behind a poppet valve, or by tangential cylinder ports controlled by the piston. Specification 456,309 is referred to.
