Valves.-A supplementary charge of air, with or without an inert gas, or of a combustible charge weaker than the main charge. is introduced at the end of the. suction stroke through ports P controlled by a sleeve valve L, which also controls the main inlet port B and exhaust port C. Regulating.-A throttle E controlling the main inlet is connected by a link K to a throttle J controlling the supplementary charge, the arrangement being such that the latter throttle does not commence to cut off the supplementary charge until the former is partly closed.
