Abstract
405,196. Combustion-product engines. KINGSTON, J. R., and POWELL, W. H., Engineer-in-Chief's Department, G.P.O., London. July 11, 1933, No. 19637. [Class 7 (i).] In an engine of the type referred to in Specification 246692, [Class 7 (i), Combustion-product &c. engines], the speed is controlled by throttling the exhaust or inlet gases from or to the power cylinder and controlling the fuel supply to the combustion chamber. As shown, the exhaust valve 6 and the fuel pump 3 are actuated by cams 7, 8 driven from the crank-shaft 9, the lift of the exhaust valve and the stroke of the pump being simultaneously controlled by wedges 12, 13 pivotally mounted on a rock shaft 14. Alternatively, the control may be effected by the use of tapered cams or by a system of links and levers with a movable fulcrum, or the fuel supply may be controlled by a bye-pass valve between the pump and sprayer, operated simultaneously with the exhaust valve. The inlet valve 5 is of the unbalanced thimble type ; and a relief valve is fitted to the compressor cylinder discharge to prevent excessive pressure in the combustion chamber. In a modification in which a sleeve valve is used for inlet and exhaust, a throttle valve is used in the exhaust pipe or manifold and a relief valve is fitted in the cylinder head. In another form, the inlet gases are throttled by an adjustable sleeve surrounding an inlet valve of the thimble type.
