Abstract

347,803. Motor power plant. GEORGE, J. W. and BENNETT, A. T., 73, Gower Street, London. Feb. 28, 1930, No. 6718. [Class 110 (iii).] The cylinder-head of an internal-combustion engine is provided with one or more auxiliary spring-loaded valves 10 for admitting the explosion gases from the cylinder or cylinders to a chamber 8, water or water vapour being admitted under pressure to the chamber by one or more valves 33 actuated from the valves 10 and the resulting mixture being employed to drive an auxiliary engine separate from, combined with, or geared to the internal-combustion engine. As shown, the cylinder head of a four-stroke side-vale engine comprises upper and lower parts 1, 2, the part 2 being formed with recesses 4 extending over the cylinders and inlet and exhaust valves, and with a threaded bore 5 for an ignition plug. The parts 1, 2 are hollowed to provide the chamber 8, which communicates with each cylinder by way of a passage 9 normally closed by a valve 10 having a skirt portion 13 sliding in a cylindrical wall 14. The valve spring 12 maintains the valve closed during compression but allows the valve to open when the charge is ignited. A partition 15 co-operates with the wall 14 to form a chamber 16 in communication with the water-jacket 17, so that the valve 10 is cooled. Water or water vapour for admission to the chamber 8 may be drawn from the water-jacket 17 and is supplied under pressure by a reciprocating or rotary pump through a pipe 35 (not shown), branches 36, and passages 37 to the body 31 of the valve 33. The valve stem is reduced at 32a and the valve body terminates in one or a pair of injection nozzles 34. The valve 33 is operated from the valve 10 through a lever 25 pivoted on a bracket 29 by means of a pivot 28, which may be adjustable to vary the extent of opening of the valve 33 relative to the valve 10. Control may also be effected by means of a valve on the water supply pipe, or by varying the stroke of the pump. The plant may consist of an expansion cylinder associated with a pair of four-stroke internalcombustion cylinders operating alternatively and communicating with a common chamber 8 ; an internal-combustion engine in which all the cylinders are associated with a common chamber 8 supplying .a separate expansion engine; or a two-stroke internal-combustion engine, each cylinder of which is associated with a separate chamber supplying a corresponding expansion cylinder.
