Abstract
220,007. Madler, F. Feb. 9, 1923. Regulating.-In a two-stroke engine, scavenging and charging air is supplied either by crankcase compression through a passage 7, Fig. 1, or, by a fan blower 30, Fig. 2, both assisted by the ejector effect of the exhaust at 33, a mixture of fuel and air being injected into the air charge by a pump 4. The pump 4 draws in air through a port 21, past a fuel nozzle 20, and through passages 18, 17, and forces the mixture into the main cylinder through passages 16, 15, the nature of the mixture being adjusted by raising or lowering a screwed plug 19 actuated by an arm 14 which is connected for simultaneous adjustment with the air valve 8, Fig. 1. The arm 14 is connected by a rod 14<1> to a cam 13 bearing on a lever 11 connected to the valve 8 by a rod 10<1>. A further adjustment of the mixture according to variations in atmospheric pressure, or in the nature of the fuel, is obtained by a throttling-member 23. In the form shown in Fig. 2, a lever varying the area of flow past the fuel nozzle is connected to means for adjusting the angular position of the cam 34 actuating the scavenging-air valve 32, thereby varying the amount of air forced back into the pipe 31; this cam 34 is, in practice, mounted on the same shaft as the crank 35 driving the pump.
