Abstract

213,243. B³chi, A. March 21, 1923, [Convention date]. Regulating.-In an engine in which the charge is supplied by a compressor 6 driven by an exhaust-actuated turbine 7, the admission of the exxhaust gases to the turbine is controlled by a valve 9 adjusted by the engine governor 5 or by hand through linkwork 8, or by a governor driven by the compressor or turbine shaft, or by a piston device subjected to the pressure in the compress- or in the inlet pipe to the turbine, or by a temperature-responsive device 33, Fig. 5, subjected to the heat of the exhaust gases supplied to the turbine, or by the fuel pump or the stopping or reversing gear, or by combinations of these devices. Valves 11, 12 may be provided for opening the inlet pipe 3 and exhaust pipe 4 to atmosphere. A hand or governor actuated throttle may also be arranged in the inlet pipe 3. In a modification, the governor on the compressor shaft controls both the inlet to the turbine and the inlets to two compressors supplying air and gas respectively. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 5, the scavenging is controlled by varying the time during which the inlet and exhaust valves 25, 26 are kept simultaneously open, the valve cams 27, 28 being arranged on a shaft adjusted axially by the governor 5 or the temperature-responsive device 33. The valve 9 and the throttle 31 in the inlet pipe 3 are so arranged as to keep the pressure in the pipe 3 higher than that in the pipe 4 so as to ensure an effective scavenging.
