Abstract

746,323. Valve gear; regulating. MOLLER, E., POUNDER, C. C., and REBBECK, Sir F. E. March 24, 1954, No. 8565/54. Class 7(6) In a supercharged duelfuel multicylinder engine having a pair of simultaneously operated inlet valves 1, 2, and a pair of simultaneously operated exhaust valves for each cylinder and wherein gaseous fuel is supplied to the super-charging air duct through gas admission valves 9, one for each cylinder, the valves 9 are operated hydraulically from the mechanical operating means 3 of either the inlet valves or the exhaust valves. The valves 1, 2 are operated simultaneously from a rocker 4 through a cross-beam 3 guided by a stem 5 which forms the plunger of a pump supplied with hydraulic fluid from a reservoir 6. On each downward stroke of the plunger 5 to open the valves 1, 2, of one cylinder, the hydraulic fluid is transmitted through a pipe 7 to a cylinder 12 formed in the stem of a valve 9 associated with another engine cylinder, whereupon the valve 9 which is fed with gaseous fuel from a manifold 21 is opened to supply gaseous fuel to the air intake pipe adjacent the intake port. The lift of the valve is controlled by a stop lever 16 engaging a flange 18 on the valve stem and adjusted by a cam 15 actuated from the fuel supply control means or engine governor, the head 13 of the valve 9 being conical so that the fuel supply varies with variations in lift. An accumulator piston 19 absorbs excess fluid delivered by the plunger 5. The valve 9 of one cylinder is actuated either from the inlet valve gear or the exhaust valve gear of another cylinder. In a modification the lift of the valve 9 is controlled by vary ing the output of the pump 5 which is surrounded by a sleeve with a helical control port therein, the sleeve being actuate from the fuel supply control means or engine governor.
