Abstract
466,275. Starting compression-ignition engines. L'ORANGE, P. Nov. 25, 1935, No. 32614. [Class 7 (v)] In a multicylinder compression-ignition engine one or a small number of the cylinders works at the high-compression ratio necessary for starting; the remaining cylinders receive exhaust gases from the high-compression cylinders whereby their charge is heated and its oxygen-content diluted. The cylinder A working on a compression ratio of 18 : 1 has a smaller bore than the cylinders B, the compression ratio in which is 12: 1. Exhaust gases emerging by the pipe H pass by the pipe K to the atmosphere during normal running, but at starting traverse the pipe F and entering the reservoir E mingle with the air supplied to the cylinders B by way of the pipes D. A single cammed-bar V, Fig. 2, controls the valves K, J, and the fuel pump elements Q, O for the cylinders A, B respectively. From the completely inoperative position o, movement to position 1 leaves the exhaust valve K open and the valve J closed but moves the bellcrank T to open the pump element Q. The engine starts on the cylinder or cylinders A only. In position 2 the valve K is closed and valve J opened transmitting the exhaust to reservoir E and heating cylinders B. In position 3 half-feed is given to the pump elements O. This is increased to full feed in position 4 with change of position of the valves J, K. In a radial cylinder engine the high-compression cylinder A is associated with the master connecting-rod, and the other cylinders with the indirectly-linked connecting- rods.
