Abstract

623,476. Two-stroke engines. MARTIN, G. W. April 30, 1947, No. 11648. Convention date, June 7, 1941. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] In a two-stroke engine operating by crankcase compression, the charge for each cylinder is drawn into a compartmented crank-case through a lift valve 36 which is opened outwardly against a spring 41 by a cam surface 52 on the crank-shaft ; the spring 41 allows the valve to open under excessive pressure in the crank-case. As shown the cam acts through a pivoted rocker 48, the valve axis being preferably in line with the crank-shaft axis, but it need not be so. The valve stem may have a cap if so desired, and a drainage duct 39 for deposited fuel may be provided. Flap valves are also described. In an engine having two parallel cylinders a wide central bearing partition in the crank-case may be hollowed to form a combined charge inlet passage and have opposed valve seats on which the two valves are pressed by a common helical spring, the valve being operated by face cams on crank-shaft discs.
