Abstract
732,263. Cycles ; regulating ; valves. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Nov. 13, 1953 [Nov. 14, 1952], No. 28760/52. Classes 7(2), 7(3) and 7(6). A water-injection valve 8, Fig. 2, in each cylinder head 7 of a supercharged engine is opened during the compression stroke against a preferably adjustably-loaded spring 9 by the pressure of the water which is supplied from a reservoir 1, Fig. 1, via an engine-driven valve 3 distributing in turn to pipes 5 each serving a cylinder, by a pump 2 preferably bridged by a by-pass valve 13 which is controlled by a spring 14 adjustably loaded by a cam or screwed cap 15 operated by hand or automatically in dependence on engine load, speed or temperature. In a diesel, the quantity of water injected may be about 15 or 0À5 per cent by weight of the fuel oil or air, respectively, used. Preferably, the admission temperature of the water is as close as possible to the temperature at which water boils in the cylinder at that time. According to the Provisional Specification, the quantity and timing of water injection is preferably such that the water is fully vaporized at the end of compression and that the charge temperature then is equal to or lower than the final exhaust temperature.
