Abstract
710,533. Fuel injection pump. DOXFORD & SONS, Ltd., W., PURDIE, W. H., JACKSON, P., and GUNN, J. G. Feb. 22, 1952 [Feb. 26, 1951], No. 4791/52. Divided out.of 710,496. Class 102 (1). A reversible internal combustion engine operating on the diesel or semi-diesel cycle has an airless fuel injection system comprising a fuel injection pump having a hydraulic accumulator, for storing under pressure the fuel to be injected, the discharge from which is controlled by a valve operated directly or indirectly by an eccentric, crank or cam which is so shaped and positioned with respect to the engine and the valve that the latter will be opened at or shortly before the end of the engine compression stroke for each direction of rotation of the engine. The description is similar to that of Specification 710,496 but includes the embodiment of Fig. 5 in which the pump cylinder 51 has an inlet port 56, controlled by recess 54 in the plunger 50, and a discharge port 67 controlled by a helical groove 66 in the plunger. The latter is rotated by a rack 58 for varying the time of closing of the inlet port and the time of opening of the discharge port.
