Abstract
664,520. Fuel injectors. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. March 5, 1949 [March 17, 1948], No. 6066/49. Class 7(iii) [Also in Group XXVIII] A fuel injection pump comprises a relatively slidable sleeve and plunger, the sleeve 13 having a closed end and a groove 55 forming a pump chamber 53 and having a pair of axially spaced inlet ports 69, 71 and a delivery port 72, and the plunger 29 having a groove 73, communicating permanently with the pump chamber, and a delivery groove 78, whereby on the pumping stroke excess fuel in the pump chamber is passed through the groove 73 until. the latter is closed, the fuel in the chamber is then pressurized, groove 78 then provides communication between the chamber and the delivery port 72 and 'finally the edge of the plunger cuts off furthernow from the chamber. The fuel in the chamber is trapped when the edge. of the: plunger passes the lower edge of groove 55 and causes a buffer for the end of the stroke. In one embodiment the plunger is fixed and the sleeve is secured to a piston 45 which is moved against a spring 35 by the engine compression. The pump which is formed integral with an injection nozzle 43 and communicates therewith through passages 72, 79, 83 and valve-disc 87. is mounted in a cavity 7 in the cylinder head which forms a reservoir for fuel supplied under pressure, and communicates with the inlet ports througha filter 65. The delivery groove 78 is helical and delivery and timing are varied by rotating the plunger by an arm 33. In another embodiment the sleeve is fixed and the plunger is reciprocated by a rocker arm and is rotated by a rack.
