Abstract

713,229. Fuel-injection pumps; air compressors. WILLE, R. June 13, 1952 [June 13, 1951], No. 14933/52. Classes 8 (1) and 102 (1). [Also in Group XXVII] An air compressor supplying a combined fuel and compressed air injector for an internalcombustion engine is actuated by the pressure of the fuel supplied by a fuel-injection pump. The diaphragm 38, Fig. 1, of an air pump having inlet and outlet valves 40, 41 is connected to a piston 37 subject to the pressure in the pumping chamber 22 of a fuel injection pump 16 having an outlet 23 leading to the fuel supply chamber 50 of the injector. The piston 37 is also connected to the pump plunger 15 by a spring 47. The pump actuating cam 10 has an eccentric portion 11 which raises the plunger 15 to close the inlet 18 and move the piston 37 through its operating stroke, whereupon compressed air is supplied past the valve 41 and through passages 42, 44 into a space 36 adjacent the injection orifice; a second cam rise 12 then operates the plunger 15 to supply injection fuel to the space 50, whereupon the valve 29 is opened and fuel, flowing through an orifice 33, passage 32 and orifices 35, is injected together with the compressed air. The stroke of the diaphragm 38 may be controlled by an adjustable stop and the fuel supply is controlled by a rotatable cylinder liner 21. In a modification the compressor is formed integral with the injector and in Fig. 3 the injector, compressor and fuel pump are combined in a single unit. The compressor comprises a spring-loaded piston 70 having an inlet valve 73 therein and attached to a piston 69 subject to the pressure in the pump space 22. The compressed air is supplied through a passage 75 which may be fitted with a spring-loaded valve.
