Abstract

594,817. Oil engines. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and WELSH, R. J. Sept. 30, 1942, No. 13741. [Class 7 (iii)] In a compression ignition engine wherein the length of the compression space in the engine cylinder is variable during the operation of the engine the spatial distribution of the fuel sprays 9a, 17a along the cylinder in the combustion space increases with the quantity of fuel injected during each cycle. A cam-actuated pump 10 delivers fuel along a pipe 15 to a distributor 16 adapted to open a valve controlling an injector 9 when smaller amounts of fuel are to be delivered and another valve controlling an injector 17 for larger amounts, the spray from the latter injector reaching a wider space than that of the injector 9. The device may be applied to a free-piston engine driving compressor 5 supplying motive fluid to a prime mover in which the quantity of fuel injected is controlled by a speed governor 14 actuated by the prime mover.
