Abstract

977,393. Fuel-injection pumps; fuel injectors; regulating I.C. engines. CUMMINS ENGINE CO. Inc. March 20, 1961, No. 10135/61. Headings F1A and F1B. A cam-actuated fuel-injection pump comprises a plunger 98 having an axial passage 124 with a radial port alignable with a fuel inlet port 116 and an axial port 125 communicating with a pumping chamber formed beneath the plunger and having an injector 102 at its outlet. Fuel entering the pumping chamber mixes with air entering the chamber from the engine cylinder, via the injector nozzle, to form a gaseous mixture which is injected into the cylinder. A non-return valve may be provided in the plunger. Fuel is supplied to the injection pump by a feed pump 32 at a rate controlled by manual and governor-controlled throttles 37, 41 and 43. An engine-driven centrifugal governor 46 acts to open throttle 41 and close throttle 43 on increase in engine speed, throttle 43 serving to limit the maximum engine speed, and throttle 41 to enter the fuel to the injection pump in accordance with the manual throttle setting and the engine speed. Idling speed is controlled by the governor, fuel for idling, with throttle 37 closed, passing through a passage 93 in throttle 41. For coasting, with throttle 37 closed, an electrical circuit, controlled either by the manual throttle and a dynamo cut-out 165, or by the manual throttle and the governor, acts to open a valve 135 in an hydraulic system to hold the injection pump plunger at the bottom of its stroke by a piston 130, and to open valves 158, 146 in fuel inlet and return lines 154, 147, for cooling and lubrication of the pump plunger via plunger grooves 141, an adjustable throttle 156 being provided in the inlet line 154. A modified cam construction provides operation of the plunger in two stages so that the pumping chamber is charged and the plunger lowered to close the inlet port, before any appreciable pressure develops in the pumping chamber, prior to the injection stroke.
