Abstract

938,264. Engine stop gear. P. E. BESSIERE. Jan. 19, 1960 [Jan. 26, 1959], No. 1860/60. Class 122 (4). [Also in Groups XXVII and XXVIII] In a fuel injection pump in which a piston 2 has an annular portion operating in a cylinder 1a to supply liquid through a valve 24 to the underside of a shuttle 8 which for example controls a by-pass 7, and in which the return from the underside of the valve 8 is throttled by a manually or governor controlled rotatable throttle 50 so that the return of the shuttle 8 is progressively delayed as the engine speed rises, the engine is prevented from running in reverse by a valve 53 which is arranged to block the outlet 52 and passage 12 when the engine reverses. The valve 53 is hydraulically actuated by a connection 56 to a gear pump 54 which may be the feed pump connected to the inlets 4, 19 and which draws through a non-return valve 60 so that pressure is built up when the pump is reversed. When the valve 53 moves to the blocking position an outlet 59 for the delivery from the gear pump is opened. The shuttle 8 in an alternative construction may throttle the inlet passage 4. In a pump of the type in which a shuttle is hydraulically actuated to cause delivery and liquid flows from one end of the shuttle cylinder to the other through a throttle passage, the valve actuated on reversal may be inserted in this passage. In the minimum or zero pass position of the throttle 50 a passage connects the upper passage 12 to an outlet 52, whereby the pump will deliver maximum fuel for starting. Specification 861,754 is referred to.
