Abstract
852,715. Fuel injection pumps. BESSIERE, P. E. Feb. 9, 1959, No. 4490/59. Class 102(1). A fuel injection pump comprises a reciprocating member 1, an inlet valve 33 and a delivery valve 4. The member 1 is preferably actuated hydraulically by the delivery from a piston 6, the end of the delivery stroke of the member 1 being determined by the opening of a by-pass conduit 35. The member 1 is moved on its suction stroke by the action of a spring 11, the force of the spring being opposed by the flow of a fluid from a pump 10 which is preferably driven at a speed proportional to the engine. The flow from the pump 10 discharges through a throttled passage 19 which is also varied with the speed of the engine, the valve 17 determining the throttled passage being acted upon by the delivery of a pump 22 also driven at engine speed. The end of the return stroke of the member 1 is thus achieved when the force due to the spring 11 is equal to the force produced by the pressure in the chamber 2a and the stroke of the member 1 is thereby decreased as the speed of the engine increases above a predetermined value. The inlet valve 33 and valves 27, 28 controlling the flow from pump 10 to and from the chamber 2a are all closed during the delivery stroke of the member 1 by the delivery of a second piston 29 moving with the piston 6. The pump 10 may supply the fluid to the cylinder 9 for the piston 6 or a separate inlet 13 and non-return valve 14 may be provided. In a modification the pump 10 may provide fuel to the delivery chamber 2b instead of the chamber 2a and the spring 11 is then housed in the chamber 2a. In this case the throttle 19 is arranged to increase with increase speed of the engine as in Fig. 2 (not shown).
