Abstract
898,220. Fuel injection pumps. BESSIERE, P. E. Jan. 8, 1959 [Jan. 21, 1958], No. 786/59. Class 102(1). A fuel injection pump in which a piston 1, driven at a speed proportional to the engine, hydraulically actuates a piston 2 which pumps fuel from the pump chamber 7 to the delivery line 9, the end of the delivery stroke of the piston 2 being determined by a by-pass conduit 13. A third piston 23 integral with the piston 1 delivers liquid past valve 20 to conduit 19 closing the valve 14 in the pump chamber feed conduit 8 during the delivery stroke and also closes a valve 28 in a conduit 21 by liquid delivered through a conduit 29. In operation at the commencement of the delivery stroke of piston 1 the space between the pistons 1 and 2 has been filled with liquid from inlet 6 so that the delivery stroke of piston 2 starts when piston 1 closes the inlet 6, at the same time the valves 14 and 28 are closed by the delivery of piston 23, a notch 32 allowing escape of excess liquid delivered by piston 28. As the piston 1 and 23 commence their suction stroke, valve 28 immediately opens and the liquid acting on valve 14 starts to escape through conduit 19, 21 and throttle 26, thus the opening of valve 14 is delayed and piston 2 under the action of friction or a light spring 12 remains in its upper position until the conduit 8 is opened by the valve 14 and fuel under pressure flows into the pump chamber 7 causing the return of piston 2. When the speed of piston 1 increases above a predetermined value the piston 2 does not complete its return stroke before the piston 1 again actuates the piston and therefore the stroke of the piston 2 and the quantity of fuel delivered is reduced. In a modification the throttle 26 may be replaced by a throttle in the feed conduit 8, thus allowing the valve 14 to open immediately, the throttle controlling the rate of flow to pump chamber 7.
