Abstract

944,422. Fuel injection pumps; starting diesel engines. P. E. BESSIERE. Jan. 19, 1960 [Jan. 26, 1959], No. 1946/60. Headings FIA and FIB. In a fuel injection pump in which a piston 5 is actuated by liquid discharged by a piston I to discharge liquid from the chamber 4b to the outlet 12 and in which the piston is returned by a spring 14 causing liquid to flow from the chamber 4a, via duct 9, which includes a throttle 10, to the chamber 4b, and in which the duct 9 is closed during the delivery stroke of the piston 1, the duct 9 is by-passed by a duct 18 which may include a throttle 19. A stop valve 20 controls the ducts 18, 19 and with the cock in position to close duct 9 and open duct 18 liquid is discharged by the piston 1 directly to the outlet 12 for starting, the effect of the throttle 19 being to cause differential pressures on the piston 5 as the engine speed increases until the piston 5 opens the normal spill port 16. The stop valve has a second position in which it closes duct 18 and opens duct 9 for normal operation and a third position in which the ducts 9, 18 are closed whereby delivery by the pump stops. Specification 861,754 is referred to.
