Abstract

119,037. Martyn, T. H. July 19, 1917, [Convention date]. Cylinders receiving liquid fuel. - A pump plunger 9 worked by the pressure in the cylinder acting on its head 15 draws fuel into the space 10 and expels it through the nozzle 21 in which it meets spraying air from the pump 30. The air enters the pump during the beginning of the engine compression stroke through a lightly loaded valve 36. Towards the end of the stroke air passes the more heavily loaded valve 37 to the space behind the plunger 31 and expels the air through the passage 39 into the nozzle 21. Water circulating in the spaces 40, 41 lubricates the pump and moistens the charge. The fuel pump plunger 9 is extended into a dash-pot 2 and carries a spring-loaded valve 18 which controls holes in the piston 4 by which the stroke of the plunger is controlled.
