1517. Lamplough, F. Jan. 20. Lever - actuated pumps; stroke, varying; valve-gear.-Fuel is injected into the cylinder a of an internal-combustion engine by a pump plunger f actuated, through a bell-crank lever h and slide i, by a tapered cam j, which may be moved by hand or by a governor to vary the stroke of the pump. The cam may also be adjusted for timing the admission of fuel. On the pump suction stroke, fuel under air pressure enters a tube c<1> and passes a valve e and through openings d<1> to the pump chamber. On the forcing stroke, the spring-loaded piston d and its grooved needle valve d<2> are lifted, and fuel is injected into the cylinder. The plunger f is returned by a spring g.
