Abstract

565,429. Fuel - injection pumps. MICKELSEN, V., and REBBECK, F. E. July 10, 1943, No. 11219. [Class 102 (i)] In a fuel-injection pump for internal-combustion engines of the type wherein the pump is operated by pressure in the engine cylinder, the length of the injection stroke is adjustably controlled by fluid pressure generated in a buffer cylinder 8 separate from the fuel pump cylinder 2. The piston 10, subjected to the engine cylinder pressure, the buffer piston 7, and the fuel pump plunger 1 are of progressively smaller diameter and connected together coaxially, the plunger 1 and the piston 7 being connected together with play to allow for slight misalignment of the cylinders 2, 8. A return spring 13 is housed in a sleeve 22 secured to the piston 10. Some of the liquid fuel supplied by an inlet 4 flows through a groove 14 and passage 15 to the chamber 16 of a valve 17, the chamber 16 being connected by a passage 18 to the cylinder 8. An arm 21 fixed to sleeve 22 is connected by adjustable tie-rods 24 and cross-heads 23, 25 to a valve rod 26 which lifts the valve 17 against the action of a spring 19. The stroke may also be adjusted automatically by a governor-controlled lever 27.
