Abstract

586,213. Fuel injection pumps. MILEWSKI, M. Sept. 18, 1944, No. 17817. [Class 102 (i)] [Also in Group XXVII] In a fuel-injection pump a hollow plunger 13 terminates in a valve seat 282 for an injection valve 28 that extends through the plunger and is secured by nuts 21 that also retain a washer 20 in position to form an abutment for the spring 19. A piston 14 is formed on the plunger 13 and its underside is exposed to the pressure in the engine cylinder. Fuel under pressure is admitted to the pipe 23 and flows past valves 24 and slots 26 in the washer 27 to the chamber 25 and depresses the plunger 13 against the spring 19 by an amount proportional to the fuel pressure that can be regulated. When the engine cylinder pressure rises, the piston 14 raises the plunger and fuel is delivered by the pressure acting on the valve head 281 and extending the stem. The piston 14 is guided by the plunger 13 and does not contact the cylinder 101. Dirt is prevented from entering the plunger cylinder by a bellows 29.
