Abstract

406,383. Oil engines. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION, 105, West Adams Street, Chicago, U.S.A. Sept. 3, 1932, No. 24604. Convention date, Sept. 3, 1931. [Class 7 (iii).] A preliminary charge of fuel is injected on to an incandescent igniter 52 in a flame chamber 35 and ignited, and the main charge is then injected through this burning mass into air compressed in the combustion chamber 16. The first charge enters through a small groove formed in the removable seat 44 of the main fuel valve 42, which has helical paths to cause the fuel to whirl as it issues. The valve 42 is lifted against the pressure of the spring 37 by the pressure of the fuel. The injection-valve body 26 is cooled by a fusible salt or high-boiling-point liquid retained in passages 28 ; the salt &c. may be cooled by water from the main cooling system acting in the channels 33. Air is drawn into the cylinder on the suction stroke past the valve 15 and is compressed on the up-stroke into the chambers 16, 35 ; a plate 57 with baffles 59 prevents much motion of the air in the chamber 35, but a projection 13-which has fins 17 and depressions 19-on the piston causes the air to whirl in the combustion chamber. The plate 57 has depressions 21 to correspond with those 19 in the piston projection. In a sleeve valve engine the air is caused to swirl by baffles in the air inlet pipe and adjacent to the inlet port. In another arrangement with overhead valves, the combustion chamber 172, Fig. 13, is inclined, and the flame chamber 35 and fuel injection valve are to one side of the combustion chamber ; a flange 174 with helical baffles 176 depends from the flame chamber and tends to prevent movement of air in that chamber but assists swirl in the combustion chamber. Pumps.-The fuel is supplied in two stages by a cam - actuated pump plunger 89, Fig. 2, which bears on a lever 82, whose fulcrum is an eccentric strap. This surrounds two sheaves 83, 84 adjustable by the arms 119 and 122. A bye-pass valve 105 is also worked off the lever 82. Adjustment of the arm 119 and sheave 83 alters the duration of injection of the main spray by adjusting the working of the bye-pass ; variation of the sheave 84 alters the time of injection. The lever 82 is raised for the main injection by a cam 73 ; for the preliminary injection a second cam 74 compresses a spring 112, which, when released causes the roller 116 on a bell-crank 77 to strike the end 117 of the lever 82 and move the pump plunger 89. The bell-crank is carried by a lever 81 adjustable with and to a greater degree than the sheave 84, so that if the main fuel injection is advanced at high engine speeds the preliminary injection is still further advanced. In a modification instead of spring actuation of the pump for the preliminary injection, the plunger may be worked by a cam through a lever acting on the end 117 of the lever 82. In another arrangement two cams in sequence act direct on the lever 82 for the two injections.
