Abstract

1,088,617. Varying compression ratio. W.G. LUNDQUIST. May 26, 1965 [June 30, 1964], No.22473/65. Heading F1B . In an I. C. engine, Fig. 1 (not shown), comprising four radial cylinder blocks, each block including two approximately parallel cylinders, Fig. 5 (not shown), having a common combustion chamber 14, the extent to which a plunger 28 extends into the combustion chamber may be varied to vary the engine compression ratio. Pressurized fluid flows through passages 54, 53 and port 43 to a chamber 39 in which the end of the plunger remote from the combustion chamber is located. This end is formed with a flange 28' which limits inward travel of the plunger. A manually operated valve 59 controls the proportion of pressurized fluid which is returned to the supply via passages 57, 58 and a return pipe (not shown). At starting valve 59 is closed and plunger 1 is forced to its furthest inward position, the supply of pressure fluid being then discontinued. After starting, valve 59 may be partially opened to allow plunger 28 to return to an intermediate portion. Alternatively pressure fluid at a constant pressure controlled by valve (64) Fig. 2 (not shown) may be supplied continuously during normal running, the piston 28 then driven backwards on each compression stroke by an amount adjustable by valve 59.
