[Class 102 (i)] In a fuel injection pump for internal-combustion engines in which the fuel is injected in two pressure stages forming a continuous injection period, the first stage being at a pressure which is relatively low and preferably substantially constant, and the second stage being at a pressure which increases from the value of the first stage to its maximum value without any lowering of pressure taking place between the two stages, a cylinder 23, connected by a channel 24 to the fuel passage 15 leading from the pump 1 to the injection valve, contains a piston valve 25 which is movable between a valve seat and an adjustable abutment 28 and which is loaded by a spring 26 corresponding to the relatively low fuel injection pressure, the reduced end 29 of the valve 25 forming in its closed position a space 30 containing a quantity of fuel unloaded by the fuel pressure. The space 30 may be connected by channels 32, 33 with an annular recess 31, so that during the first stage of the injection a part of the fuel will pass through a throttle channel 34 to the pump suction chamber. When the valve 25 engages the abutment 28 the second stage of the injection takes place. Specification 545,559 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes and illustrates a form which does not include the space 30, states that the piston 25 may be replaced by a bellows or diaphragm, or by a positively governed piston working in a cylinder in communication with the fuel pipe, and comprises also the subjectmatter of Specification 563,551. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
