Abstract

Single-acting piston pumps; valves, arrangement of.-A fuel pump for internal-combustion engines comprises a casing a provided with an inlet chamber r, a delivery chamber s, and a pump chamber t. The lower portion of the plunger b is of reduced diameter and has an axial passage m opening into the chamber t and radial ports n, o communicating periodically with the inlet and delivery chambers r, s. The ports n, o are controlled by a sleeve valve c slidably mounted on the plunger and braked in its movements by a spring-pressed block i. At the beginning of the suction stroke the chambers r, s are momentarily connected through the ports n, o and passage m. A sleeve d fixed on the plunger then closes the ports o and during the remainder of the upward stroke, fuel enters the chamber t through the ports n and passage m. During the downstroke the ports n are closed by the sleeve c and the fuel is delivered through the passage m and ports o. The stroke of tha plunger may be varied by means of an adjustable stop l.
