Abstract

494,272. Oil engines ; fuel-injection pumps. HONN, H. V. April 24, 1937, No. 11821. [Class 7 (iii)] [Also in Group XXVIII] In an oil engine having an auxiliary cylinder in which liquid fuel and air are ignited by the heat of compression, part of the air charge compressed in the working cylinder is used to convey the liquid fuel to the auxiliary cylinder. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, an auxiliary piston 21 is raised rapidly by a cam, towards the end of the compression stroke in the working cylinder 10, to compress a charge of fuel and air in the auxiliary cylinder 20. The charge ignites by the heat of compression, and is injected, into an air charge in the working cylinder, past a spring-pressed valve 30 and through a passage 17. The valve 30 operates in a split cage 27 and is exposed to the pressure in the working cylinder. The seating surface 32 of the valve is provided with two annular rings 35, 36 separated by a recess 34. The piston 21 remains at the top of its stroke until near the end of the next compression stroke, when it descends rapidly and uncovers a port 49 to permit the pressure in the working cylinder to open a valve 50 ; part of the charge in the working cylinder then passes through passages 17, 46 and withdraws a metered quantity of fuel from a recess 55 in which it has been deposited by a pump. In modified constructions (a) the valve 55 is omitted and the fuel deposited in a recess around a Venturi tube in the passage 17, and (b) only sufficient fuel for idling is deposited in the recess, the main fuel charge being injected into the working cylinder. Pumps.-A cam 71 on a rotating plate 70 actuates a spring-pressed piston 62, inserted in a sleeve 61 in a block 59, to deliver fuel, fed through an inlet 102, past a spring-pressed outlet valve 67. The plate is carried by a srew-threaded sleeve 76 which can be raised or lowered by a sleeve 77 by a rack 79 and pinion 80.
