Abstract

526,666. Fuel-injection pumps. HEMMINGSEN, T. V. March 24, 1939, No. 9326. Convention date, May 24, 1938. [Class 102 (i)] A fuel-injection pump comprises plungers 9a, 9b separated by a space 27 occupied by a liquid cushion. The plunger 9a is integral with a piston 9c exposed to the pressure in the engine cylinder 13. The gaseous pressure is not sufficient to open the fuel valve 3 and the delivery stroke is effected by the lever 16 actuated by the cam 18. Regulated quantities of fuel are fed to the pump through pipe 20, containing the accumulator 25, by a second pump. On the downward stroke of the plunger 9a, the port 28 is closed and the plunger 9b is moved by the trapped liquid cushion until it uncovers the port 29 when the liquid cushion is released. On the upward stroke, the liquid cushion is replaced first through port 29 and then port 28.
