Abstract

852,884. Fuel injection pumps. S. U. CARBURETTER CO. Ltd., and SIMMONDS PRECISION PRODUCTS Inc., [formerly SIMMONDS AEROCESSORIES Inc.]. June 1, 1959 [Aug. 28, 1958], No. 27587/58. Class 102(1). A fuel injection pump comprises a small plunger 10 associated with a pumping chamber 28 and a large plunger 11 associated with a pump chamber 26, the two plungers being urged into contact with a cam 15 by a spring 20. The plunger 10 contacts an abutment 17 of the plunger 11 from which leads a passage 18. Fuel is fed. by a feed pump 2 to the chamber 28 and an auxiliary liquid, other than fuel, is fed by a feed pump 7 to the chamber 26. As the plungers move on their delivery stroke fuel is discharged through conduit 35 and the auxiliary liquid through a small bore conduit 29 and as the pressure in the chamber 26 increases quicker than that in the chamber 28 the auxiliary liquid acts on the lower end of the plunger 10 to separate the plungers and part of the auxiliary liquid is by-passed through the passage 18. Such an arrangement ensures that the pressure in the chamber 26 is approximately the same as that in the chamber 28 throughout the discharge of fuel. The fuel is fed to the engine cylinders under the control of a metering valve 43 and a by-pass valve 32 and the auxiliary liquid is used to ensure sealing of these valves as described in Specification 834,710.
