Abstract

326,025. Benes, J. March 12, 1929. Air, removing; multiple-delivery piston pumps; regulating delivery by by-passes.-A fuel pump for multi-cylinder internal-combustion engines comprises a pump barrel 28 and a differential plunger 2, 2<1> which draws the fuel from a chamber 25 through a valve 16 and delivers it through a passage 19 to an axial bore 20 in a rotary valve 8<1> which distributes it successively through a passage 23 to a number of pipes 14, 15 connected to the engine cylinders. During the first part of the delivery stroke, the inlet valve 16 is kept open so that any air in the chamber 28 may return to the chamber 25. In the seat of the rotary valve are arranged two rotatable rings 10, 11 provided with chambers 35, 36 communicating by plungers 21, 22 with the bore 20 and by passages 35', 36<1> with the chamber 25. During the delivery stroke, the fuel is returned to the chamber 25 through the passages 21, 22, 35, 36, 35<1>, 36<1> until the passages 21, 22 cease to register with the passages 35, 36. The fuel then passes through the bore 20 and passage 23 to the pipes 14, 15. By moving the two rings 10, 11 together, the moment at which delivery begins is varied, and by moving one ring relatively to the other, as in Fig. 7, the quantity delivered is varied.
