Abstract

247,372. Harvey, E. W., and Smollett, A. Feb. 3, 1925. Two-stroke-cycle engines.-In engines wherein a cylinder 5 slides over a fixed abutment 6, the combustion chamber being within the cylinder, the engine is made. double acting by attaching to this cylinder a piston 4 working in a fixed cylinder 2. The two cylinders are of the same internal diameter. The cylinder 5 reciprocates in a stationary cylinder 3, the shoulder 5a at the top of the cylinder 5 and its lower end 7 forming pump plungers for compressing charging air. The pumps deliver to a common delivery pipe 20 past non-return valves 34, 36; the upper pump chamber supplies the combustion chamber within the cylinder 5, the lower pump delivering to the top combustion chamber. Ports 22, 23 and 13 are formed in the cylinder 5 to register with the inlet and exhaust passages and with a fuel injection valve 28. The fuel injection valve 9 is placed at the top of the upper cylinder. The gudgeon 42, to which the connecting-rod is attached, works in slots in the fixed abutment 6, the gudgeon carrying a shell 46 to cover the slots. In a modification the cylinder 5 is connected to a cross-head by two piston rods working in the lower pump chamber.
