Abstract

661,722. Reciprocating pumps. LUCAS, Ltd., J. May 25, 1950 [June 7, 1949]. No. 15093/49. Class 102 (i). A pump particularly for delivering fuel or lubricant comprises a spring-loaded piston c actuated on its suction stroke by a hollow plunger g, which also serves as a delivery valve. The plunger, which is pressed inwardly to effect the suction stroke by a cam i, and tappet j, has an axial delivery passage k, which is closed during the suction stroke by the inner end of the piston which uncovers an inlet port f and draws liquid into the cylinder b. The plunger and piston are returned together by their springs h, d, until the inlet port is closed when the liquid trapped in the cylinder causes them to separate and open the passage k. The piston then discharges liquid through the passage k to an outlet o. The inner end of the plunger is chamfered so that its return movement is assisted by the liquid pressure in the cylinder or alternatively the spring h may be omitted. In another embodiment the piston is formed as a bucket with a disc valve.
