Abstract

1,051,552. Reciprocating pumps. VALVE CORPORATION OF AMERICA. March 9, 1964 [May 8, 1963], No.9935/64. Heading F1A. In a pump mounted on a liquid container, the pump piston 54 has an actuator stem 22 passing out of the cylinder 34 and the stem 22 has a bore 62 for the discharge of liquid. The piston 54 comprises two elements 64, 66 and has a bore in which is located the stem 76 of a valve member 78. When the actuator button 14 is depressed, liquid in the cylinder 34 is forced out through the bore 62 and orifice 16 while air enters the container through the clearance between the stem 22 and opening 24 and an opening 56 which is uncovered by the piston element 66. The valve stem 76 rests on a shoulder 84 and being spring loaded remains fixed during pumping. The lower end of the stem 76 is D-shaped to allow liquid to enter the chamber during the piston suction stroke.
