Abstract

1305338 Fuel injection systems SULZER BROS Ltd 25 Aug 1971 [2 Sept 1970] 39942/71 Heading F1B A diesel fuel injection system comprises a fuel pump 10, Fig.1, a pressure amplifier including a piston having a first part 25 of larger cross-sectional area and a second part 26 of smaller cross-sectional area, the fuel pump delivery pressure acting on the first piston part and the cylinder space of the second piston part being connected to a fuel chamber of an injection valve which is opened by the pressure of fuel in the chamber. The fuel pump 10 has an inlet valve 12, a delivery valve 17 and an overflow valve 14, the timing of which can be varied by an eccentric 16 to control the end of injection. Fuel at pump delivery pressure passes via duct 18 to act on piston part 25 so that the piston is moved to force fuel, which previously has passed through non-return valve 29, at a proportionately higher pressure from chamber 30 to the chamber of the injector 32 causing the valve 33 to open to commence injection. Leakage fuel passes to the reservoir via duct 34. The pressure in duct 18 is limited by a valve 19. In another embodiment the pump 10, Fig.2 is supplied by a feed pump 41 and pressure in the duct 18 is passed to a groove 45 so that when the piston 47 descends below groove 45 the pressure in space 30 rises abruptly. A constriction 42 damps the upward movement of the piston 47. In a modification of this embodiment a non-return valve (50) Fig. 3 (not shown) is fitted in duct 31 and a constriction (51) is provided between the non-return valve 40 and the pump 10. The pressure amplifier and injector may be combined in one housing.
