Abstract

948,624. Regulating I.C. engines and fuel injection pumps. P. E. BESSIERE. March 1, 1960 [June 2, 1959], No. 7170/60. Heading F1A and F1B. In an I.C. engine fuel injection installation in which a pump piston-cylinder assembly 2 Fig.1 successively feeds fuel injectors through a distributer 9, 10, the discharge end of the interconnecting conduit 8 communicates periodically with a discharge passage 13 having means whereby a predetermined pressure is maintained in conduit 8 before the beginning of each delivery period, the discharge passage being controlled so that communication with the conduit is closed before the beginning of each delivery period and opened at the earliest at the end of each injection. During successive delivery strokes of the piston 1 rotary element 10 connects conduit 8, through grooves 12 and 11 successively to the injectors through conduits 11 1 , 11 2 , 11 3 . After each injection period groove 12 communicates through one of the grooves 19 with the discharge passage 13 which has a calibrated pressure relief valve 15. In a modification the pressure is maintained by the delivery of a continuous output pump or in a further modification the pressure relief valve may be replaced by a simple throttle. In another embodiment the delivery of a single cylinder pump 1, Fig. 2 is modified automatically in dependency on the speed of the engine by means of a slide 20 which controls a discharge conduit 27. During the delivery stroke an auxiliary piston 21 delivers liquid through a non-return valve 24 into cylinder 25 beneath slide 20 which moves upwardly against return spring 26. Fuel delivery ceases when groove 20a discharges conduit 27. When slide 20 returns, liquid in cylinder 25 is directed through a throttle 29, and the return of slide 20 is braked and the resulting reduced slide stroke adjusts the effective delivery stroke of piston 1. Specification 861,754 is referred to.
