Abstract

1328325 Fuel-injection pumps SULZER BROS Ltd 28 July 1972 [11 Aug 1971] 35420/72 Heading F1A A fuel-injection pump for a diesel engine comprises a piston 3' with a control edge 6 controlling inlet and delivery ports 7, 13 to determine the start and duration of injection and an accumulator 18 of a capacity at least equal to that of the pump cylinder for receiving the liquid displaced by the piston after closure of the delivery port or the whole of the liquid displaced if injection is prevented, the prestressing force of the accumulator being greater than the force produced on the accumulator by the injection pressure. The accumulator may comprise a spring loaded piston, as shown, or a gas-pressurized diaphragm. Piston 3' is statable by a rack 11 to adjust control edge 6. A check valve 16 may be provided in the delivery line to maintain pressure therein. In the embodiment shown, the accumulator discharges into the cylinder during the suction stroke, and a vacuum is produced by the piston until it opens inlet port 7. In Fig.2 (not shown), a further inlet port with a check valve opens into the top of the cylinder to prevent vacuum formation.
