Abstract

In a fuel injection pump comprising pistons 10 reciprocated in a rotating distributer 11 by an annular cam 12 which is angularly adjusted, to vary the pump timing in accordance with engine speed, by the delivery pressure of a feed pump 14 acting on a piston 13, the delivery pressure of pump 14 being dependent on engine speed, a valve A is located between pump 14 and piston 13 and operates such that piston 13 remains in its retarded position during starting until the engine speed rises above its idling speed, the valve then opening so that the delivery pressure from pump 14 advances piston 13 at idling speed and above. The valve has a ball 4, Fig. 3, biased on to its seat 3 by a spring-loaded plunger 5. The delivery pressure of pump 14 acts to unseat ball 4 when the engine is above idling speed during starting, and the larger exposed area of plunger 5 prevents closure of ball 4 when the speed falls to idling. The valve A also prevents the reaction forces of the pump pistons on cam 12 from moving piston 13 against feed pump pressure.
