In a rotating cylinder-distributor type fuel injection pump in which an annular actuating cam is angularly adjustable to vary the timing of injection, an arm 26 on the cam is engageable with a plate 21 and a valve 24 in a piston 19 movable in one direction by a spring 20 and in the other by liquid pressure from a connection 25b to a feed pump, the pressure from which varies in accordance with engine speed. During the pumping stroke reaction on the cam causes the arm 26 to seat the valve 24 on the piston, sealing the chamber 18 so that a hydraulic lock prevents angular movement of the cam 9. Increase in engine speed results in increased feed pressure which when the valve 24 opens on the suction stroke of the pistons 7 is applied to the end of the piston 19 in the chamber 18 whereby the cam is angularly moved to advance injection. On decrease in speed the spring 20 retards the injection.
