Abstract
825,136. Fuel injection pumps. NAPIER & SON Ltd., D. June 25, 1957 [July 9, 1956], No. 21257/56. Class 102(1). In a fuel injection pump of the "spill" type having the usual control surfaces on the plunger to determine the beginning and end of the injection period the timing of injection is varied by altering the rear position of the stroke of the plunger in relation to the pump chamber. The pump plunger 1 is secured at its lower end to a piston 6 which slides in a cylinder 7 of the tappet 8 carrying the cam follower roller 16. The piston 6 has a boss 11 at its lower end and is urged downward by spring 15 while its upward movement is limited by a retaining ring 9. Liquid is fed through port 18 to an annular passage 17 in the pump body and the tappet 8 is provided with a series of ports 14 which align with the passage 17 when the tappet 8 is at its bottom dead centre position so that the liquid from the port 8 and passageway 17 flows into the cylinder 7 and raises the piston 6 when the pressure is sufficient to overcome the action of the spring 15. This movement of the piston 6 raises the rear position of the stroke of the plunger 1 and consequently advances the timing of the injection. On reducing the pressure applied to port 18 the timing is retarded.
