Abstract

392,491. Fuel-injection pumps. SOC. GENERALE DES CARBURATEURS ZENITH, 10, Rue Petitot, Geneva, Switzerland. Jan. 23, 1933, No. 2162. Convention date, Jan. 23, 1932. [Class 102 (i).] In a fuel-injection pump in which the plunger 33, Fig. 2, or a piston valve, is formed with a helical relief edge 26 and the plunger is rotated by means of a rack 46 and pinion 45 to vary the timing of release, the rotation is transmitted from the pinion to the plunger through a helical spring. The tappet return spring 49 may be employed for this purpose, one end of the spring being secured to the pinion and the other end to the tappet, to which the plunger is secured. Alternatively the plunger is rotated in the usual manner, as shown, by a pin 44 engaging slots in a sleeve carried by the pinion 45, and the spring 49 is employed for effecting axial adjustment of the plunger for varying the timing of injection. One end of the spring is secured to a pinion 47 rotated by a rack 48 and the other end is secured to a cap 34 fitting over the tappet 35 and connected to the plunger. The cap 34 is formed with helical edges engaging a pin 36 carried by the tappet, so that rotation of the cap effects axial adjustment of the plunger. In a modification, Fig. 3, the plunger is connected to a member 53, which screws into the tappet 52 and has a rectangular or other portion slidable in a similar hole in a washer 54 to which the lower end of the spring 68 is attached. Ball bearings 67, 56 are interposed between the pinion 47 and the casing and between the washer 54 and the tappet.
