Abstract

442,554. Fuel - injection pumps. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., Brock House, Langham Street, and TRAPP, G. T., 105, Aylward Road, Merton Park, both in London. Aug. 16, 1934, Nos. 23653/34 and 9133/35. [Class 102 (i)] In a fuel-injection pump the timing of injection is adjusted by moving the cylinder axially and the amount of fuel injected is adjusted by relative rotation of the cylinder and plunger. The cylinder 27, Fig. 1, moves in a guide 18 and engages a fixed head 25 through which the discharge takes place. The assembly is secured by means of a screwed plug 22. The cylinder is movable axially by means of a nut 30 gearing with a rack 28, and is rotatable by means of a rack 29, gearing with a pinion 31 integral with the cylinder. A helical edge 51 and a helical groove 46 on the plunger co-operate with a triangular port 47 in the cylinder in order to effect the commencement and the termination, respectively, of injection. The plunger may have duplicate control edges co-operating with a second cylinder port. The head 36 of the plunger engages a tappet 15 sliding in a removable guide 16 secured by a screw 17. In a modification, Fig. 7, the plunger is rotatable, instead of the cylinder, by means of a rack 29, pinion 31 and a pin 57 carried by the plunger and engaging slots in a sleeve integral with the pinion. A diametral passage 61 in the plunger co-operates at one end with a circumferential suction slot 64 in the cylinder and at the other end with an inclined spill slot 66.
